The Romance; an episode in the life of a young writer

"The expressionistic illustrations and prose capture a contemporary edginess of modern

metropolitan living. This darkly comic, noirish tale brings to mind the view from the rainy

bus stop of anonymous illuminated windows! An engaging slice of late night thoughts."

“Everyone is an artist.” What Joseph Beuys was attempting to communicate with this, rather controversial, statement was not a postmodern dismissal of the possibility of meaningful art. For the postmodernist there are no grand narratives and, in more crude terms, ‘everything has already been done’ – we either accept this or descend into pastiche. For Beuys, art can be found in everyday life; there is no strict dividing (and defining) lines between this art and that art.

In the same vein, TANK is proud to present another unique exhibition: a group show dedicated to art inspired by other forms of art. Such practice has been around as long as the human desire to create itself. Drawing inspiration from everything from Biblical illustrations to modern-day, mundane e-romance, a selection pieces have been chosen for their originality and commitment to challenging the viewer’s understanding of the traditional, single-medium artwork. Highlights include:

Jason Shelley & Vishal Shah - The Romance: An Episode In The Life of A Young Writer. Shah explores in painting the written text of Jason Shelley in a way which visually transcends the meaning of the text alone and transforms it. In doing so, Shah captures another essence of Shelleys’ writing whilst at the same time testing our visual reading capabilities.

Moving from the written word to the spoken, we introduce the work of Woland Riordan (pictured), a London-based contemporary graphic designer and musician, who has turned his hand to portraiture as his speciality. He absorbs close-ups from memory and meticulously paints them in a Realist style – we are confronted with real people, disposable cogs in a dystopian music machine. Riordan explores how the industry characterizes their era and their struggles.

The exploration of the theme continues with events throughout the duration of the exhibition.

POET JASON HAS A HOLLYWOOD FAN
Jetsetting south Essex author Jason Shelley has a Hollywood fan after a trip to New York.
Jason, who grew up in Beresford Gardens, Hadleigh, met movie star Ben Stiller in a coffee shop during a book tour.
They discussed Jason's poetry collection, Grey Love, and the actor, best known for comedy films like Meet the Parents, accepted a copy.
Jason, who attended the Deanes School and Westwood Primary, said: "I was with my agent after doing a book signing. We were sitting near a woman we later realised was Monica Lewinsky when Ben came in with his wife.
"My agent asked a waitress to give him a
copy of the book and he came over and had a chat. He seemed quite an amusing guy."
Grey Love was published in 2003, to critical acclaim, after the success of Jason's first poetry anthology, No Looking Back.
Jason is currently photographs as part of an installation in Butterfly Walk, Camberwell, with British artist Sarah Lucas.
The artwork by Vishal Shah, for his latest title, The Romance, an episode in the life a young writer was exhibited as part of the Threads exhibition, in April and May this year, at the Tank Gallery, in Ladywell, curated by Deeqa Ismail.
